Benefits
The Market Commitment Evaluation Framework is designed to provide tangible benefits to those with interest in advancing environmental and social progress in fisheries, on vessels and across oceans.
Retailers, Seafood Producers and Primary Suppliers
As these are the companies most likely to have made public commitments, the Framework:
- Is not a new ‘ask’. It’s a new tool. Enables you to track progress against your commitments, inform improvement action plans, demonstrate leadership.
- Is developed and endorsed by leading NGOs that partner with companies and MRAG, a globally-recognized fisheries consulting & auditing firm.
- Levels the playing field by establishing a consistent and credible framework for all Companies to evaluate progress on key commitments.
- Is applicable across seafood categories. The Framework can be used for sustainability commitments made for any wild-caught species, product form, or origin
- Streamlines complexity. It establishes common information requirements for your supply chain. Recognizes tools already in use as sources of information to satisfy data requirements.
- Enables companies to create strategic value, share their story with credibility and build trust.
Suppliers and Wholesalers
While these companies do not make their own sustainability commitments as often; they are often asked to provide information and data to their customers in support of their commitments. For these companies, the Framework:
- Shows a clear set of the most common commitments their customers make, as well as the means of verification required to meet them
- Points to the type of information these companies can gather in support of their customers’ requests
- As more companies leverage the Framework, harmonizes information and data asks from various customers, minimizing “unique” data requests
Civil Society Organizations
For these groups, including environmental and worker rights NGOs, the Framework:
- Provides third-party, audit-level metrics they can use to validate their market partners’ progress against key public commitments
- Serves as an opportunity to consult with and support market partners in meeting the means of verification for each ask, build or improve methods of measuring and tracking, etc.
- Provides metrics for commitments beyond those their market partners have likely made, providing a platform for expanding commitments if desired
- Allows for “apples-to-apples” data aggregation as more companies use the same metrics to track progress, providing a clearer picture of collective action and an opportunity to assess impact
- Provides and enabling a baseline for increased transparency via public reporting on progress against commitments
