Development and Oversight
Developing the Framework
The framework has been developed by participants in the NGO Tuna Forum based on the most common sustainability and worker rights commitments its participants have requested of their industry partners, as well as a broader assessment of common commitments made.
From this set of the most common commitments, MRAG Americas – a third-party, independent auditor – was tasked with developing specific guidance and means of verification for each commitment.
The result of these efforts became the Market Commitment Evaluation Framework (MCEF).
Evolution of the Framework
Tracking, measuring and reporting on retailer and seafood industry commitments is not a static process, so the Framework will be adaptable over time to ensure it continues to meet needs. Therefore, the Framework will evolve as needed in multiple ways:
- Refinements to remain aligned with improvements in data and tools
- Refinements to commitments from industry
- New metrics developed for future commitments broadly made by retailers and or industry
- New metrics absorbed into this Framework that are broadly used and can be judged to meet a third-party, auditable level.
Framework Management & Oversight
The Framework is overseen by a third-party – participants in the NGO Tuna Forum, supported ARIA Strategic Communications:
The effort is funded via philanthropic support from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation.
