Category Guidance

Require that all shelf-stable products list the following² on packaging or through a traceability site: species name, catch method, and area of capture.

• Acceptable species names for skipjack, albacore, bigeye and yellowfin tunas are as follows:
  • Katsuwonus pelamis, Skipjack, Bonite, Listado
  • Thunnus alalunga, Albacore, Germon, Atún blanco
  • Thunnus albacares, Yellowfin, Thon Jaune, Rabil
  • Thunnus obesus, Bigeye, Thon Obese, Patudo
• Commonly used catch methods include purse seine, longline, pole & line, handline, troll, trawl.

Means of Verification

Obtain list of shelf-stable products sold by company and randomly select four (4) products to verify whether they include information on the species name, catch method, gear type and area of capture (using the format described under the Category Guidance column).
